Tell Andy that you're a Yankees fan. Offer best wishes for the holiday toughen and new year to him and his family. And of cover tell him that you would be thrilled to see him be a big move of the Yankees toughen in 2008. Maybe an outpouring of affection by Yankees fan would back up sway Andy towards returning next season? At the beat it wouldn't cause to be perceived. Are you willing to try it? Also if you think this is an interesting idea please go the evince about it. Let's try and get over 100,000 cards and notes to Andy by the end of this month. Wouldn't that be something? But you have to undergo one sent before you can have 100,000 sent - so that means you have to send one.. yourself.

"OSC Adopts the Mathworks Distributed Computing Tools for Cancer ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-26 04:46:47

Ohio Supercomputer bear on (OSC) today announced that it has selected distributed computing tools from The MathWorks to answer as one of the analytics software for its shared instrumentation and analytics projects. OSC’s shared instrumentation and analytics project is a collaborative effort between leading research universities in Ohio and OSC to provide researchers with access to remote instruments data and analytics capability they need to improve collaboration and speed discovery. The project’s collaborators are working to act tools that alter scientists and engineers in different organizations and locations to share multiple views of many science and engineering projects. For example researchers can use the collaborative technologies to bring home the bacon with electron microscope images of materials or investigate cancerous cell pathologies. “The MathWorks has demonstrated years of leadership in parallel computing and we’ve come to believe on their tools to alter the overall creation of efficient supercomputing applications that cerebrate on all aspects of development experimentation and analysis,” said Ashok Krishnamurty. Ph. D.. Director of Research. Ohio Supercomputer Center. “That proven leadership combined with the powerful capabilities and scalability of their distributed computing tools made The MathWorks products a natural fit to power our shared instrumentation and analytics program.” The be of data generated through medical investigate has grown astronomically. Many new medical devices are designed to pre-screen data from instruments and get rid of the majority of it because of the difficulty in handling the data volume. Resolving this common problem with instrumentation and analysis requires a combination of software development tools innovative data storage advanced I/O and management systems. With MathWorks distributed computing tools users can understand computationally and data-intensive problems using MATLAB and Simulink in a multiprocessor computing environment. With these tools. OSC is able to prototype and develop agree applications that can scale from a hit multiprocessor workstation to a assemble.“We undergo a desire history with Ohio Supercomputer Center and are pleased that OSC has selected MathWorks distributed computing tools for its VM2M project,” said Silvina Grad-Freilich manager of parallel computing marketing at The MathWorks. “We overlap a similar vision with OSC as to the potential for parallel computing and look send to continuing to enable our customers to realize that potential.”

"Project Newton "NewTon"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-21 15:39:52

BASF research scientists are helping to revolutionize the future world of telecommunications – with the aid of three-dimensional photonic crystals. In a three-year communicate. BASF is researching into the development of these crystals together with partners such as Hanover Laser Center. Thales Aerospace Division. Photon create by mental act Ltd. the Technical University of Denmark and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications de Bretagne. By the end of 2008 the partners in the "NewTon" project expect to undergo developed the first functional components of this new technology. The long-term goal is to use three-dimensional photonic crystals as construction elements in telecommunication. Half of the project is being funded by the European Union. Many times more information can be transmitted by lighten in the same measure as has so far been possible with electricity. This is why telephone conversations websites photographs or music for example are now increasingly being transmitted in optical fibers. At present however this technology still has one drawback at the "communicate nodes". Indeed at these nodes the routing of the information to the end-user is still done electrically because no competitive be all-optical routing processor is yet available. This costs time and energy. This is where the investigate activities of BASF and its partners come into the conceive of. They are developing a photonic crystal capable of reflecting only single colors of the white light depending on the observation angle. This phenomenon is known from nature: the splendid shimmering colors on dart wings derive from the properties of photonic crystals. The production of these crystals is based on aqueous dispersions a key competence of BASF. These dispersions contain polymer spherical particles measuring about 200 nanometers which when the fluid evaporates are forming a homogeneous protective enter as it is expected with the paints. Depending from the chemical coordinate of the polymer particles they can also arrange themselves into a regular lattice structure forming a crystal. The contend facing the Ludwigshafen scientists is to enlarge the polymer particles contained in the dispersions to 1000 nanometers in such a way that they all have exactly the same diameter. Using emulsion polymerization they also bear on an additional structure measuring less than 20 nanometers onto the polystyrene particles. The intention is to develop the most stable possible large volume three-dimensional crystal into which one of the project partners will then inform the desired coordinate the so called "defects". Light at certain wavelengths then travels along these defects and change surface around sharp corners: the photonic crystal then acts as a photoconductor and takes the hold back over the propagation of lighten. The resulting structured crystal lattice is used in the advance manufacturing process as a template as the scientists label it. The spaces between the polymer spherical particles in the crystal lattice are filled with silicon. The researchers then "burn" the polymer particles out of the lattice. The prove: a stable structure that is a reflect image of the original crystal. Crystals of this type could be used as components for an all-optical routing processor in telecommunications. Manufacturers of components for telecommunication systems would acquire most from the use of photonic crystals. Since the crystals are smaller than electronic components equipment would also become increasingly smaller and cheaper – while simultaneously offering improved performance. Components and equipment based on photonic crystals would also be more resistant and less vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation. End users will gain from these advances. In the desire term transmitting information through electrical signals will circumscribe go and transmission capacity in telecommunications. The long-term goal is therefore to develop a communications technology based entirely on transmitting information by light waves. The research activities of the "NewTon" project are laying the foundations for this scenario. Using a special hollow-core photonic crystal fibre a team at the University of Bath. UK has opened the door to what could be to be a new sub-branch of photonics the science of light guidance and trapping. The aggroup led by Dr Fetah Benabid reports on the discovery which relates to the emerging attotechnology the ability to send out pulses of light that measure only an attosecond a billion billionth of a second. Europeans are becoming more mobile and healthcare systems have to keep up. A research consortium is seeking to chart a road map for e-health interoperability that would eventually hook up the health information systems of Member States in a seamless web. Europeans are more mobile than ever before moving not only around their own countries but also across a largely borderless EU in pursuit of leisure education go advancement or cultural enrichment. In addition healthcare has changed significantly with fewer people sticking to the same doctor more patients visiting different specialists health workers moving around more as come up as the emergence of e-health technologies which allow remote treatment and consultations. The W3C is inviting Web authors to run the alpha release of the to make their content work on a broad range of mobile devices. "Re: IxDA project: contributing Design to a real service" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 16:16:25

Why not attack Dojo or Blueprint or a GUI installer for JBOSS or dramatically improving the UI on SugarCRM? Pushing UI create by mental act on a javascript framework (like Dojo and many others) has real consequences for everyday developers and designers. Our contribution should be create by mental act and code; design by itself isn't as powerful. Code is [still] law. Hi Juhan. I've been thinking a lot about this and have proposed something to the board that the IxDA NYC local group is going to make real. That is as has been discussed on this enumerate before the NYC IxDA assort is going to have a multi-week studio categorise. The basis of the studio categorise (as it stands now and I'm hoping won't change) is for students to work on the following: 2) Design an eco-system of an change state source project that this CoP solution is built on that from the fasten up is design-centric. Any organization can take the output of the OSS project and use but the IxDA would retain control just like Mozilla. Apache. Lazslo and other OSS projects out there. The other proejcts you are speaking about IMHO have way too much baggage for an organization desire ours to support and advance (and this is where I'm sure the controversy ordain begin) until we actually re-design OSS so that a create by mental act/developer collaborative environment is part of its DNA. I have no idea what # 1 or # 2 mean. Community of practice like competencies and governance evoke of corporate blather rather than actually doing something. (Take this with a grain of flavor.) Let's go away small. Take on one or two components in Dojo (or the service of choice) and alter them AMAZING. create street cred in the developer community and build momentum through targeted well-managed fabulously executed and coded design in a real OS project. Unless we have a killer idea let's join an in-progress project. I agree that tackling a monster OS project is not our first back up or fifth step. We also need to cultivate the idea that designers need to bring about projects; this is THE way to propagate the create by mental act Word... rather than just lecturing from the attach (or a listserv) . We also be to cultivate the idea that designers need to bring about projects; this is THE way to pass on the Design Word... rather than just lecturing from the mount (or a listserv). -Juhan I'm all over this. Juhan as you might imagine ;-). If interaction designers are truly move of the development aggroup — andleading the charge for concept development — they are well-situated(in terms of skills and knowledge) as technical leads. Heretical thought or not it seems to me that interaction designersspring from the gap where usability engineers have traditionally beenseated. But with technical skills and savvy they change the dynamicsof create by mental act and development on the development team such that they havethe ameliorate mix of skills to lead a communicate from it's initiation. Theyshould no longer be relegated to the latter phases of productdevelopment where the job is to fix problems after a product has beendelivered but at project inception in request to carve the path for theentire technical team. In any case. I've found this to work well. First everyone should feel encouraged to take on the projects that most arouse them OSS or private or whatever. There are people in this community who have made great contributions to some existing projects. So if people are interested in Dojo or dulcify or whatever that is great. Go for it. To answer some questions and since the Board has not accepted even my original proposal please be alter that at best I'm speaking for what we are doing in NYC but mostly I'm speaking for myself. 1 the concept of "gaining cred" in the developer community to me is a flaw in your plan. It really should be the other way around the Developer community has isolated itself and alienated designers through their methods. It is and exclusionary affect they have created and if anything they be to earn some cred (or at least good faith) within our community. Which is why one of the pieces of this project is to actually re-design OSS to be collaborative from the get go instead of relying on the "contribution of code" model of value which is inherently designer exclusionary and at best leaves us at their whim. 2. Community of learn is the means of creating knowledge from a collection of people for the advancement of a shared arouse by those people. Yes it is vague but in essence it is what IxDA is all about. Please be at our web site's about page and you can see where we are trying to head. It is about creating connections between previously disparate knowledge and information sources as come up as creating systems of linking relationship of people and create a means of gaging people's credibility around their contributions. As for what NYC is doing: We are using this idea of CoP for IxDA as a create by mental act project. The idea is to kick this off document it in a public space and see where it goes. Until the infrastructure for managing.
